UM Pulse: Vocal Arts Institute

Combining choral ensemble singing, voice lessons, and music classes, VAI offers energized and challenging experiences focused on both choral and solo vocal training. Small group voice lessons allow participants to study with UM voice faculty members and class offerings include ensemble rehearsals and theory/musicianship classes. As members of the Vocal Arts Institute Chorale, all students have an opportunity to rehearse and perform diverse and exciting SATB repertoire.

The Vocal Arts Institute Chorale will perform on the final Saturday and student recitals allow participants to perform solo works throughout the week. Class offerings include:

UM Conducting Symposium

This workshop is devoted to the enhancement of beautiful and communicative choral singing. Sessions on rehearsal techniques, Dalcroze, male and female voice techniques, African music, compelling performances, voice placement, score study, and movement will take place during the Symposium. Students will conduct in class and be videotaped to aid in the evaluation of their work. Reading sessions of new repertoire will take place daily as well as practical opportunities for workshop participants.

Experience a galaxy far, far away with your Flint Symphony Orchestra, as they present a musical journey of Star Wars along with a selection of patriotic favorites. Join us for an exciting evening of fun, music and fireworks. 

With special guest vocalist – Flint native and American Idol finalist, LaKisha Jones, the Flint Youth Symphony Orchestra and guest musicians from Limonest, France.
